Char dham Yatra Opening and Closing Dates

The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand features four revered shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each temple has designated opening and closing dates that follow Hindu customs. This pilgrimage is significant for Hindus and spans roughly 1,607 km starting from Haridwar.

Yamunotri – Yamunotri Temple, perched at an elevation of 3,293 meters, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. It is located 223 km from Rishikesh, and devotees need to trek 6 km from Janki Chatti to reach the temple. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October-November). Due to heavy snowfall in winter, the temple becomes inaccessible, and the deity is worshipped in Kharsali.

Gangotri – Gangotri Temple, which honors Goddess Ganga, stands at 3,100 meters and is the origin of the sacred Ganges River. It is situated 270 km from Rishikesh and opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May), closing on Diwali (October-November). During winter, the idol is moved to Mukhba village for worship.

Kedarnath – Kedarnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is located at 3,583 meters and is 260 km from Rishikesh. Pilgrims must complete a 16 km trek from Gaurikund to reach it. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya or after Maha Shivratri (April-May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October-November). In winter, the idol is relocated to Ukhimath due to heavy snowfall.

Badrinath – Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is considered the holiest of the Char Dhams. It is situated at 3,133 meters and is 297 km from Rishikesh. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) and closes on Vijayadashami or Bhai Dooj (October-November). Because of significant snowfall in winter, the idol is worshipped in Pandukeshwar.
